HOW TO APPLY
No one expects to be diagnosed with an illness or injury that affects mobility, independence and dignity, but one in seven Albertans face those challenges daily.
Unfortunately, equipment vital to everyday activities can often be financially out of reach for people who need it most as they face the financial hardships disabilities can bring. With assistance from Easter Seals Alberta, it is possible to ease the financial burden for a person with a disability through the provision of: power wheelchairs, scooters, vehicle and home adaptations, communication devices and other environmental control options. This important program provides Albertans with disabilities and special needs and their families with equipment not available through government or other community resourcioes. We are a last resort agency.
A single piece of equipment can enhance the quality of life - returning individuals to a more independent and active life, which means they can interact in their community and contribute to society. Mobility and communication equipment opens the door to a world most of us take for granted. Consider this:
- Augmentative communication devices give children and adults who have no voice the power to communicate in a classroom, at home, or in a work environment.
- Power wheelchairs and scooters are much more than mobility. Many people in Alberta would be isolated from their communities without them. They serve an important need. Allowing people full integration into their community and also reducing hospital stays and medical problems associated with pain and being immobile. It allows people to live independently, outside an institution or without a 24 hour care giver. More importantly it allows children to go to school, adults to go to work and seniors to volunteer.
- Home adaptations such as stairs lifts, porch lifts and portable ramps, ensure people in wheelchairs and scooters can manage in their home independently and leave their home safely without the challenge of stairs.
- Vehicle adaptatns safely lift individuals and their wheelchair into a vehicle for easy transport. It allows parents to take children, and children to take grandparents to medical appointments or on family outings with ease and protection.
The equipment we provide is essential. It means a healthier lifestyle resulting in less hospital stays and less dependence on the health care system. More importantly, it means being able to take an active role in society again.
For over 60 years Easter Seals Alberta has helped children and adults with disabilities and special needs achieve their full individual potential.
When all other sources of funding have failed, Easter Seals Alberta is there.
